When you're choosing snacks for your family, you want something that’s more than just tasty; you want food that’s made with care, with quality ingredients, and with a story you can feel good about. At Hammond’s Pretzels, that story starts all the way back in 1931, when our family began handcrafting sourdough pretzels in a small bakery in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Nearly 100 years later, we’re still making pretzels the same way, in the same location, with the same dedication to tradition, ingredients, and taste.
At Hammond’s, every sourdough pretzel is made by hand, from start to finish. There are no machines stamping out identical shapes or rushing through the baking process. Instead, our skilled bakers gently handle the sourdough, twisting each pretzel with care and always giving each batch of sourdough the proper time it needs to rise and ferment. This human touch isn’t just about nostalgia; it’s the key to what makes Hammond’s sourdough pretzels so special. Our sourdough pretzels are light, crunchy, and airy texture comes directly from the delicate way the dough is treated, something only possible when it’s done by hand.

And while the texture and flavor keep people coming back, the health-conscious benefits of sourdough give families even more reason to fall in love. Sourdough is easier to digest and may be gentler on sensitive stomachs, something parents appreciate when finding snacks for their kids (or themselves!). The natural fermentation also unlocks more nutrients in the grain, making each bite more wholesome than ultra-processed snacks.
But beyond the nutritional perks, there’s something deeply comforting about a snack that’s steeped in heritage. At Hammond we aren’t just making pretzels, we’re preserving a family tradition, one twist at a time. When you open a bag of Hammond’s handmade sourdough pretzels, you're not just enjoying a snack; you’re sharing a moment that’s been passed down for generations. And supporting a family-run business!

More and more we see that people are snacking more mindfully than ever before and that people are taking a renewed interest in sourdough breads, snacks, and of course pretzels. We’ve long been a staple in Lancaster, PA, and the surrounding communities, but we’ve been delighted to see new customers find us through our online bakery store.

At Hammond’s, old-fashioned sourdough pretzels aren’t a marketing gimmick. We still proof our sourdough in wooden barrels and handle our dough with care before we handmake, twist, and salt each pretzel by hand. (Except our unsalted pretzels, of course!) Every batch of sourdough pretzels is placed on one of our pretzel boards before going into our soapstone hearth to be baked and rotated by hand next to the hearth's fire. Baking this way may take more effort, but the superior results are well worth it.
So the next time you’re stocking up on snacks, skip the overly processed chips and crackers, and reach for something timeless, tasty, and thoughtfully made. No shortcuts. Just real ingredients, real bakers, and really great sourdough pretzel snacks.
